GEORGETOWN – Chief Fred Mitchell Jr. is pleased to announce that Masconomet Regional High School senior Will Sprowl has successfully completed the Georgetown Fire Department’s internship program.

Sprowl completed a month-long internship last Thursday. He is the department’s only intern of the season and the second student to complete Georgetown Fire’s internship program.

Sprowl learned basic firefighting skills and adminstrative duties of the department, such as fire prevention, fire life safety, and training.

In his final report for the internship, Sprowl detailed aspects of the fire service he witnessed firsthand that are often overlooked by the public, such as inspections and general public safety measures. He also recognized that firefighters are required to deal with a variety of emergencies, not just fighting fires.

“Throughout [my] whole experience in Georgetown, I came to find that the most important components of a well functioning department are charismatic and knowledgeable individuals working there day in and day out,” Sprowl said. “Without these people’s presence and willingness to teach me about the ins and outs of the job, I would not understand the daily functions of a fire department as well as I do now.”

Now that his internship has ended, Sprowl is considering becoming a career firefighter, a profession that, beforehand, he never thought of pursuing.

“Our internship program is a great way for students to not only interact with the department, but also get a sense for what firefighters do on a daily basis,” Chief Mitchell said. “It’s our honor to teach young men like Will the kind of impact a fire department can have on a community.

Students interested in interning with the Georgetown Fire Department should contact their high school guidance counselor.
