Georgetown Fire Department Responds to Chimney Fire

Chief Matt McKay reports that the Georgetown Fire Department extinguished a chimney fire on Tuesday night while working carefully to limit damage to a residence.

On Tuesday, Jan. 2, at approximately 11:47 p.m. the Georgetown Fire Department was notified of a possible fire at a home on North Street. Chief McKay was the first to arrive at the scene and discovered an active fire in a stove pipe inside the home.

Two on-duty firefighters were already on another call with the town’s ambulance, so a second tone was sounded to bring additional firefighters and mutual aid from Groveland to the scene.

Arriving firefighters extinguished the fire in the home’s wood stove and stove pipe, and stopped the fire from spreading beyond a small area of the attic. The fire in the attic was extinguished as well.

Firefighters took extra care while battling the fire to put salvage covers over nearby furniture and flooring, which helped to significantly limit damage from the fire.

The fire was brought under control by 12:30 a.m., and units cleared the scene by 1 a.m.

Firefighters from Groveland provided mutual aid at the scene.

“The homeowner in this situation did exactly the right thing by calling the fire department as soon as they saw signs of a possible fire, and that enabled us to respond quickly and limit the spread of this fire,” said Chief McKay. “I also want to thank firefighters who took extra care to minimize damage inside the home while stopping the spread of the fire.”
