The Georgetown Fire and Police Departments invite the public to attend a remembrance ceremony marking the 20th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
The annual remembrance ceremony held by Georgetown Fire and Police was reluctantly cancelled last year due to COVID-19 concerns, but will proceed this year on Sept. 11 at 8:30 a.m.
The event will be held outside of the Georgetown Public Safety Building at 47 Central St., with masks recommended but not required.
“Cancelling our annual remembrance was a difficult decision last year, and the COVID-19 pandemic is not behind us, but conditions now allow us to gather outdoors for this solemn remembrance 20 years on from one of the most difficult days in our nation’s history,” Fire Chief Savage said. “We hope everyone will join us as we remember that which we must truly never forget.”
The event will feature speakers from the Police and Fire Departments, prayers from local clergy and a moment of silence for those lost in the attacks, as well as those lost to the impacts of working at Ground Zero in the weeks after.
“The horror of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks brought us together as a country 20 years ago, and we hope the community will join us Saturday as we come together once again to remember those lost,” Police Chief Cudmore said. “We are proud to be able to return to this tradition of respect and remembrance.”
