Georgetown Fire Department Receives Grant to Boost Public Safety Outreach

GEORGETOWN — Chief Fred A. Mitchell Jr. is pleased to announce that the Georgetown Fire Department received a federal grant to boost its community risk reduction efforts. 

The $10,000 grant, awarded by the Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA), will enable the Georgetown Fire Department to develop and administer targeted community safety surveys, the results of which will be used to develop public safety courses and fire prevention programs. 

Georgetown Firefighters currently administer a variety of risk reduction programs, including car seat installations, smoke detector installations, CPR classes, school visits and open house events. 

“We have a strong foundation of community safety programs,” Chief Mitchell said. “This grant gives us a chance to build upon what we already offer while focusing on what our community is looking for in terms of safety and fire prevention outreach.”

With the grant, the department will be able to evaluate critical, community-specific data that can guide the development of future programs as well as the potential expansion of existing ones in order to cater to the town’s demographics.

“The most important part of our mission is serving the community and keeping our residents safe,” Fire Prevention Officer Nick Bruno said. “By collecting and evaluating more specific data about the residents we serve, it will allow us to focus on more exact areas of need as we develop our safety programs.”
